Psoriasis is an auto-immune disorder where the immune system gives faulty signals to the brain. It causes an exponential growth of skin cells which results in thick patches of psoriasis on various parts of the body. Increased level of body toxins is one of the most common causes for triggering an auto-immune disease. If the level of toxins increases beyond the safety limit in your body, then they would seep into the bloodstream and circulate throughout your body. The liver and kidney would no longer to able to flush these toxins off your body and eventually your body would try to remove these toxins through the skin in the form of psoriasis patches.
Below enlist various factors which can trigger an auto-immune disease:
- Increased amount of toxins in the body (due to leaky gut syndrome, chronic constipation, faulty digestive system, irregular and bad food habits)
- Negative emotions such as stress, anxiety, depression
- Chronic habit of Smoking
- Alcohol consumption (chronic habit of heavy alcohol consumption)
- Over consumption of antibiotics
- Any injury or skin infection
- Chronic illness
Why toxins build up in your body
The food that we eat provides us:
- The necessary energy to perform various everyday tasks
- Various nutrients that our body needs for smooth body functioning
After getting these two things from the food, it is important that the remaining waste food particles (toxins) get out of your body through urine, stool, sweat and by breathing out. If this whole cycle disrupts at any stage and there is any hindrance in elimination of toxins from your body, then the accumulation of toxins would take place. Accumulated toxins would make your liver and kidney to overwork to get rid of them and sooner or later these organs would get impaired and would no longer be effective in flushing out these toxins any more. Then your skin would come to rescue and would facilitate the elimination of toxins from your body in the form of psoriasis patches.
Here, we have understood the role of accumulation of body toxins in psoriasis development.
Body detoxification for Psoriasis healing
As explained earlier, psoriasis is not just a skin disorder. It is beyond the skin. Actually, it is an internal body metabolism related problem. Treating just the skin patches using creams and oils) is something like- painting the outer walls of your house with new colors every time without removing the accumulated dirt from inside of the house. The effective psoriasis healing would be an Inside-out treatment, targeting every aspect of the person- Indigestion, constipation, nutritional deficiency and high level of stress. It involves a restricted psoriasis diet and positive changes in your lifestyle (less alcohol, less smoking, regular physical exercise, proper sleep and stress management). Use of herbs like turmeric, neem, virgin coconut oil, flaxseeds and supplements like omega 3, vitamin D and vitamin B12 are also helpful. To sum up, we have to adopt the path of holistic healing- we would be healing not only the skin but the whole body metabolism with the help of diet, lifestyle, herbs and dietary supplements.
Treatment of Psoriasis involves two steps:
- Elimination of accumulated toxins from the body
- To prevent further accumulation of toxins in the body
The main culprits of accumulation of toxins are- chronic constipation, chronic indigestion, impaired liver, food sensitivity, chronic stress and heavy alcohol consumption. Food sensitivity refers to the inability of your body to process (digest) certain foods like dairy products, wheat gluten and foods rich in protein like red meat.
Always remember- The thing that matters is how much you digest; not how much you eat.
Body detoxification is the first step for Psoriasis healing
You must have seen an aquarium (a small fish pond). If the fishes of the aquarium starts to die, then the corrective action is- to drain the whole water of the aquarium, remove the accumulated dirt (and sludge) and then, refill it with fresh water. If they just pour in fresh water in the aquarium without draining the old contaminated water, then that fresh supply of water would also get contaminated soon and it would not solve the purpose.
The same principle works here- if you detox your body first and then make changes in your diet and lifestyle, take dietary supplements and consume herbs- then the healing effect would be more effective and fast.
On the other hand, if you take a healthy psoriasis diet and make positive changes in your lifestyle without detoxifying your body, then the healing effect would be quite slow.
Hence, the importance of body detoxification for psoriasis healing is quite obvious.
My Journey of Psoriasis Healing
It was August 2005, when I noticed dandruff on my scalp and skin patches on my back. I was 21 at that time. I didn’t have a history of psoriasis in my family. Neither I nor anyone in my family at that time had even a trace of doubt that I would get suffered from such a stubborn lifelong skin disorder.
My mother took it as a common dandruff problem tried all those home remedies to remove these flakes, but all in vain. Then, I saw a dermatologist and he immediately diagnosed me with psoriasis. Then it had been a story of numerous failed (with some temporary relief) attempts to cure psoriasis. After visiting various doctors without any significant improvement, I was very clear in my mind that this is not just a skin problem but the root cause lies somewhere in my gut. I was very clear that psoriasis is related to my internal body metabolism and just taking care of these skin patches with creams and ointments is not of much use.
In January 2014 when I took charge of my psoriasis (and my life). I started reading books and I would research a lot on the Internet. I come across various theories like:
- Leaky gut syndrome (entrance of body toxins in the blood stream due to leakage in intestinal lining)
- Acid-alkaline body pH balance
- Improper liver functioning and accumulation of internal body toxins
- Constipation and how it can play a role in triggering various skin problems
- Importance of digestion and how harmful is undigested food
- Food insensitivity and its effect on people with weakened liver
- Protein indigestion
- Insufficient production of bile salts for proper digestion
I used to experience indigestion, constipation and stress attacks frequently since my early teenage (I am a sort of sensitive person). My liver strength has been always in doubt since childhood as I was very thin during my childhood and I gained some weight in my teenage only. Hence, I was able to relate all my past experiences with these theories and I was damn sure that a holistic approach with positive changes in diet, lifestyle and use of dietary supplements and herbs would definitely help me.
I was not wrong!!
Holistic healing concept worked amazingly well for me and it is still helping me to get out of psoriasis.

Various body detoxification ideas
Drinking warm lemon in the morning empty stomach (and night before going to bed, if possible) and undergoing an effective natural body detox program (lasting 1 to 3 days) in every 6 or 8 weeks is the best way of detoxification for me. I Drink 1 liter of warm water with 1 full size lemon squeezed in it every morning before going to the toilet. It works really well for me. Also, I make sure that one meal out of three standard meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) should be composed of only raw fruits and vegetables. I eat raw foods a lot- apple, papaya, pears, guava, cucumber, carrot, onion, ginger, spinach, ripe banana- I eat all these stuffs a lot. I regularly exercise for half an hour a day. It accelerates the process of body detoxification and aids in digestion.

Beyond Body detoxification
We have understood the prime importance of body detoxification for psoriasis healing. But, we have to understand that after body detoxification, it is very important that we avoid any further accumulation of toxins in your body by making suitable changes in diet and lifestyle otherwise the healing effect would not be effective in the long run. A restricted diet and positive lifestyle play a vital role in achieving this target.
A lot of times, people would undergo a detox program like panchkarma and experience tremendous improvement. But, the improvement would soon fade up because they fail to avoid unhealthy diet and lifestyle. It is something like- you hire a cleaner to clean your room and after cleaning, you still continue to pile dirt in your room. So, your room would be again filled with dirt very soon.
Hence, after a detox program, you should follow a healthy diet and lifestyle to enjoy long term benefits.
We will discuss various ways of body detoxification for psoriasis healing in detail future articles. Happy healing 🙂
